PJ Fleck and Minnesota are gearing up for a huge game against Penn State, but the head coach of the Gophers is also dealing with a bit of speculation from around the country.
Fleck’s brief, three-year stint in Minneapolis has put his name back towards the top of the list for hottest coaches in the country. He is 20-13 with the Gophers, including a bowl win and a seven-win campaign in 2018.
However, the 2019 season has been remarkable with Minnesota playing for its best season since 2016 and a shot at double-digit wins for the first time since 2003.
With an opening at USC and a vacancy at FSU created with the firing of Willie Taggart over the weekend, that speculation has ramped up. It was also tackled head-on during a radio appearance by Fleck.
During an interview on the Sports Huddle with Sid and Dave on WCCO 830, Fleck was asked about the “big-time jobs.” According to Fleck, Minnesota is just that.
“They’re already speculating about you leaving for one of the big-time jobs,” said the host. “Are you happy here?”
“Minnesota is a big-time job. Period” labeled Fleck. “I really believe that. Heather and I absolutely love it in Minnesota. Our kids love it when they’re here. It’s a lot of fun. We’ve got a lot of work to do and a lot of things to finish, but we love living here for sure.”
Of course, a different conversation may be had if a potential big-money offer is on the table. However, it absolutely must be said that Fleck sounds happy and adamant about what he and the Gophers can accomplish.
