Matt Rhule talked about how Nebraska will be handling team captains in 2023. Rhule revealed this when he spoke to the media on Saturday.

Rhule is not going to be picking season-long captains. The Huskers will be using different captains every week. The goal will be to determine permanent captains in December before playing in a bowl game.

If Rhule does lead Nebraska to a bowl game this season, it would the first time the program has played in one since the 2016 season. The Huskers faced Tennessee in the Music City Bowl that year.

A decision should be announced for the captains regarding Week 1’s game soon. Nebraska will be facing Minnesota on Aug. 31 at Huntington Bank Stadium.

While the Huskers are not doing season-long captains, the program has been honoring select players with single-digit jersey numbers. The first 4 players to receive the honor were QB Jeff Sims, LB Luke Reimer, WR Billy Kemp and DB Isaac Gifford. Three more players have since been added to the fold with a total of 7 single-digit jerseys handed out in fall camp.

It will be interesting to see who the captains will be for the Week 1 contest. There are plenty of new faces to choose from.

Kickoff from Minnesota will be at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.
