Nebraska’s recent run of frustration on the field can be erased in one place: The recruiting trail.

To that end, head coach Scott Frost’s staff, which just completed its first season, is hitting the road to try to sign prospects for the Class of 2019.

And because Nebraska has no bowl game to prepare for, coaches can completely focus on getting as many commits as possible before the Early Signing Period, which is Dec. 19-21. As of this writing, the analysts at 247 sports ranked Nebraska’s commit list 21st in the nation, fourth in the Big Ten.

Here’s a look at how Big Red is doing in recruiting so far.

The biggest names

Omaha product Nick Henrich (Burke High) is the highest-ranked recruit to commit to Nebraska so far, according to 247’s ratings. Henrich, a 4-star linebacker, is the No. 141 recruit on their list. Bid Red has three other commits in the top 300, all rated 4-star prospects: running back Wandale Robinson (more on him later), offensive tackle Bryce Benhart and quarterback Luke McCaffrey, the younger brother of Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey.

Latest commits

The past few weeks have been pretty good for the Cornhuskers on the recruiting trail. In November, 3-star safety Myles Farmer of Atlanta chose Nebraska. Then 3-star defensive end Jamin Graham, from Alabama, committed to Big Red. Finally, in perhaps one of their biggest coups in recruiting this year, Frost and his staff landed running back Robinson, who decommitted from Kentucky.

Position of power

Devine Ogizbo, Nebraska’s leading rusher this season, is departing and last year’s big JUCO transfer in, Greg Bell, played just a few games before transferring back out. So the running back spot is very thin after Mo Washington. In addition to Wandale Robinson, the Cornhuskers have also landed 3-star running back prospects Ronald Thompkins of Loganville, Ga., Rahmir Johnson of Bergen Catholic in New Jersey and Dedrick Mills, who is rated the nation’s No. 1 junior college RB prospect.

Position of need

After Guy Thomas announced his departure from the program, all four linebackers from the Class of 2017 are gone. And stalwart 2018 starters Dedrick Young and Luke Gifford are departing seniors. That’s why Henrich would be such a huge signing. The only other LB commit so far is 3-star prospect Jackson Hannah of Nashville, Tenn. Big Red has some LB experience returning but could use more depth.

Final analysis

In Frost’s first season in charge, the program lost 20 non-seniors. So it makes sense that Nebraska would have a lot of scholarships available. It seems the Cornhuskers are wasting no time, with 22 commits. The roster was pretty thin in several places in 2018 and the team was young. If these Class of 2019 prospects wind up playing a lot in the fall the team will be even younger. We’ll see if their talent level proves worthy of what might wind up a top-20 recruiting class.
