Serious charges are still pending against Nebraska’s Maurice Washington, but the running back has served his punishment for head coach Scott Frost.

In Saturday’s season opener, Washington was sidelined for the first half against South Alabama which now appears to have been a minimal suspension for the ball carrier. He appeared on the field in the second half, taking six carries for 39 yards and adding one catch for 13 yards.

All of this while Washington is awaiting to appear in a California court in a child pornography case that stems from before arriving at Nebraska. Washington allegedly violated the state’s revenge porn law by sending a 10-second video of a 15-year-old girl performing a sex act to that same girl. He also allegedly sent a vulgar message with the video.

Washington did not record the video and was not involved in the act.

Following Saturday’s 35-21 win over South Alabama, Frost spoke with the media and confirmed that Washington will continue to play during the season until there’s a ruling in his case.

“We won’t consider any additional discipline for him until the matter is completely adjudicated, so the plan was to sit him in the first half and play him the second,” Frost said in postgame presser. “He’ll play going forward. I won’t have any other comment about it until it’s adjudicated in California.”

Washington’s status for the opener wasn’t known until Frost confirmed he would play in the second half during a halftime interview.

So, even with felony charges pending, expect to see Washington on the field against Colorado on Saturday.
