Balloons will continued to be released at Memorial Stadium – for now.

The Nebraska tradition of students releasing red balloons after the Cornhuskers score their first touchdown, which dates back more than 60 years, was on the ballot for the recent Association of Students of the University of Nebraska election. According to The Daily Nebraskan, 51.9 percent voted in favor of keeping the tradition. It’s a narrow margin, but it’s a victory for those who enjoy the tradition. Student body turnout in the election was up from 11.4 percent in 2018 to 16.4 percent.

As Saturday Tradition noted, releasing the balloons has come under harsh scrutiny lately from environmental activists. Students did vote for the ban of plastic bags on campus.
