It took Drew Allar a quarter to shake the rust off and get No. 8 Penn State into the end zone in its 2024 season opener at West Virginia.
After a sloppy, scoreless 1st quarter in Morgantown that included a fumble and punt on the Nittany Lions’ 1st 2 possessions, the junior quarterback got Penn State on the scoreboard on the 1st play of the 2nd quarter on a 50-yard touchdown pass to Harrison Wallace III. The 2-point conversion failed, but it seemed to wake the Nittany Lions up.
After forcing a West Virginia punt on its next possession, Allar got Penn State going again. This time, it was a 10-play, 71-yard drive that included a clutch conversion on 4th-and-4 from the Mountaineers’ 27-yard line. Allar found tight end Tyler Warren on the play for 7 yards, moving the Nittany Lions to West Virginia’s 20-yard line.

It kept the drive moving, it kept Penn State’s momentum going, and 1 play later the Nittany Lions were in the end zone again, as Allar hooked up with junior running back Kaytron Allen on a 20-yard TD pass to put Penn State up 13-0 with 9:46 left in the 2nd quarter.

Suddenly, Penn State looked like itself after sleepwalking through that 1st quarter in hostile territory.
