It took some time for Illinois to get moving on the recruiting trail this cycle, but Lovie Smith and company seem to be chugging along now.

Over the weekend, the Illini received some major news, landing a commitment from highly-touted four-star quarterback C.J. Dixon. Later, Illinois added some depth and size to its offensive line, landing a three-star tackle to the 2020 class.

St. Louis product Kevin Tyler gave his verbal pledge to the Illini on Sunday. Tyler brings a massive 6-foot-5, 295-pound frame to Champaign and bolsters a unit that has lacked depth and experience since Smith took over the program.

Tyler posted his announcement in a video on Twitter.

Per 247Sports’ Composite rankings, Tyler is ranked as the No. 100 offensive tackle in the 2020 class and is the 22nd-best player out of Missouri. He’s the second offensive lineman to give a verbal commitment to Illinois this cycle, joining three-star North Carolina native Phifer Griffin.

Illinois increases its number of prospects to six this cycle and has jumped a dozen spots in the recruiting rankings. The Illini still sit at the bottom of the B1G and rank 88th nationally.

Tyler held 15 total offers. He picked Illinois over Houston, Indiana, Iowa State and Kansas, among other programs.
