Illinois coach Bret Bielema has announced he is awarding scholarships to five walk-ons in the Illini program.
Bielema is putting junior linebacker Sean Coghlan, freshman tight end Tip Reiman, freshman linebacker Ryan Meed, sophomore outside linebacker Bryce Barnes and junior linebacker Isaac Darkangelo on scholarship.
Bielema made that announcement on his weekly radio show, via 247Sports.
Of that group, Coghlan and Reiman have the most playing time. Both have seen significant time on special teams over the course of their careers, and have impressed the new Illinois coaching staff so far.
The Illini are coming off a disappointing loss to UTSA in Week 1. That defeat comes on the heels of a triumphant home victory against Nebraska in Week 0.
Illinois starting quarterback Brandon Peters is still recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered vs. the Huskers. His status for next week’s game remains unclear.
Illinois faces Virginia on the road in Week 3.
