Joel Klatt is sold on Michigan after a Week 5 demolition of Nebraska. He bumped the Wolverines to the No. 1 overall spot on his rankings, and it’s hard to deny Jim Harbaugh’s program looked dominant and at full strength against the Huskers.

With any decision like that, some amount of blowback is to be expected from fans across the country. Klatt addressed some of those who have been critical of his rankings in a recent segment and explained what makes Michigan tick.

According to Klatt, the inevitability of Michigan’s attack comes to what the Wolverines do on early downs to set up 3rd down.

“I’ve made the comparison that Michigan is like a boa constrictor, there’s an inevitability to their win, there’s an inevitability to their dominance. And that’s because they’re constantly playing with the odds in their favor,” said Klatt. “This is what I mean by that: every single set of downs there are some odds going on, and the odds are ‘What is 3rd down going to be?’… Everyone wants to concentrate on 3rd down but it’s really about first down, and what you have to do on first down is win at the line of scrimmage.”

After a 5-0 start, Michigan maintains some of the best national championship odds after back-to-back CFP trips. A tough road still remains, but the Wolverines are firing on all cylinders right now.
