Kirk Ferentz has his starting quarterback for Iowa as the team heads into the 2022 season.

Coming out of 10 wins and a B1G West title in 2021, the Hawkeyes put the QB position up for grabs throughout the offseason. That QB battle included Spencer Petras – the starter for much of last season – and Alex Padilla.

On Tuesday, Ferentz made the call for Week 1 official, tabbing Petras as QB1 heading into the game against South Dakota State.

Petras is the most experienced QB on the roster, throwing for 1,880 yards and 10 touchdowns in 12 games last season. Unfortunately, he completed just 57.3% of passes and had 9 interceptions on the season.

Also during the offseason, the Hawkeyes shifted OC Brian Ferentz to the additional duties of working with the QBs and added an offensive analyst focusing on the position.

Now, it’s up to Petras and the adjusted offensive staff to show real growth in 2022. Iowa already has an elite defense, so any marginal growth from the offense could put the team back into contention for the B1G Championship Game.
