Mark Whipple: Coaching as a nice guy ‘doesn’t work as well as when I’m an (expletive)’

Mark Whipple may have seemed a bit surly during a Week 5 win for Nebraska. He addressed that during his Tuesday press conference.
Whipple tackled why he’s opted to go the firm route with his players, and, well… he dialed up an NSFW analogy to make his point.
“When I walk around being a nice guy it just doesn’t work as well as when I’m a dick.”

“You know, when I walk around being a nice guy, it just doesn’t work as well as when I’m a dick,” Whipple explained. “I don’t know why, that’s just what I told the kids on Monday.
“I said look, just when I have something across my rear-end, guys just play better and that’s what it was like at halftime.”
One event that featured Whipple in that type of situation surfaced during the first half of action against Indiana. The offensive coordinator for the Huskers was seen chewing out Casey Thompson after a mistake on 3rd down.
Thompson was removed from the offense for the next drive, but that move ended with Chubba Purdy getting sacked and fumbling in the end zone for a Hoosier touchdown.
We’ll see if Whipple continues to get results with this approach to the players.
