Derrick Mitchell, Jr. saw the writing on the wall.

Iowa’s offense has a feature back in Akrum Wadley, and several capable backups. Carries won’t be easy to come by in 2017.

The Hawkeyes announced on Wednesday that Mitchell will leave the program and play his final season as a graduate transfer elsewhere.

Mitchell began his Iowa career as a receiver and switched to running back two years ago.

In 2016, Mitchell rushed for 12 yards on two carries, one of which was a touchdown. As Iowa’s fourth-string back in 2015, Mitchell ran for 162 yards on 25 carries and two touchdowns. He also had 15 catches for 141 yards.

Iowa will return all of its starting offensive line in 2017.
