NCAA joins probe into individual resembling Connor Stalions appearing on CMU sidelines

The NCAA is joining the ongoing investigation into an individual resembling Connor Stalions appearing on Central Michigan’s sidelines earlier this season.

In a statement shared Monday afternoon, CMU AD Amy Folan confirmed the university is continuing its review of the matter in cooperation with the NCAA. With that update, it is now an official NCAA enforcement matter.

“Central Michigan continues its review of the matter in cooperation with the NCAA,” wrote Folan. “As this is an ongoing NCAA enforcement matter, we are unable to provide further comment at this time.”

This particular story began when images of an individual resembling Stalions began circulating on social media. Those images came from the official FS1 broadcast of the game between CMU and Michigan State with the individual resembling Stalions wearing official CMU gear and standing on the CMU sidelines.

Head coach Jim McElwain addressed the matter of pictures related to the “sign-stealer guy.” McElwain confirmed Stalions’ name was not on any of the sideline passes handed out for the game and said CMU would get to the bottom of the situation.

Now, the NCAA joins that probe, and it will be interesting to see what they uncover. However, it is certainly noteworthy that CMU has been unable to quickly identify an individual who was roaming the sidelines close to the coaching staff during a regular-season game.

As for Stalions, he recently resigned from his position citing the fact that the investigation has created a distraction for Jim Harbaugh’s program.
