While Scott Frost has not been lucky with one-possession games, Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald has been showing he is one of the better coaches in close games. In the 31-28 win over Nebraska on Saturday in Ireland, Fitzgerald secured his 49th one-score win as the head coach of Northwestern.

Northwestern’s 49th one-possession win since 2006 is tied with LSU as the most one-score game wins from teams in a power conference over that time span.

Northwestern did not have a one-possession win in the 2021 college football season.

The last time coach Fitzgerald had a one-score win with his team was in Northwestern’s 27-20 win at Purdue on November 14 in the 2020 College Football season. That win over Purdue was a part of three consecutive one-possession victories in the 2020 season.

On the other side of things, Frost has been among the worst performers in one-score games during his time at Nebraska. That is quite the discrepancy between the two head coaches, and it was on display Saturday in Dublin.
