Two Illinois offensive linemen reportedly left the program at the conclusion of the spring season, according to 247Sports. A spokesperson from the team confirmed the news to Illini Inquirer’s Jeremy Werner.
Kevin Tyler and Phifer Griffin, both redshirt freshmen, have left the program. According to the report, neither has entered the NCAA transfer portal at this time.
Neither Tyler nor Griffin played during the 2020 season for the Fighting Illini. The team ended the year with a 2-6 record.
The news of the departures of Tyler and Griffin come in addition to redshirt freshman Brevyn Jones entering his name into the transfer portal after one season in Champaign. He appeared in two games during the 2020 campaign.
Jones transferred to Illinois after spending the 2019 season at Mississippi State.
While none of the three players played extensively for Illinois last season, it is a blow to the depth the Fighting Illini would like to have in the trenches.
