Sam Houston State captures first FCS Championship with dramatic game-winning TD

Though it was interrupted by a lengthy weather delay, Sunday’s FCS Championship turned into a dramatic affair.

After Sam Houston State built a 17-7 lead behind the work of Jequez Ezzard, South Dakota State finally came alive in the fourth quarter. That is when the Jackrabbits went to work on the legs of running back Isaiah Davis.

With the passing game struggling under backup quarterback Keaton Heide, Davis rattled off two impressive touchdowns. That included an epic 85-yard dash that featured a multitude of broken tackles and a tightrope act down the sideline.

Now facing a 21-17 deficit, Sam Houston was led by quarterback Eric Schmid on a game-winning touchdown drive. The gutsy performance by Schmid was capped with a touchdown to Ife Adeyi with 16 seconds left in the game, proving to be the game winner.

For the game, Schmid completed 20 of 37 passes for 209 yards and three touchdowns. That performance led the Bearkats to a 23-21 victory and the first FCS Championship in program history.
