Pat Fitzgerald talks about Northwestern's unique opportunity to play at Wrigley Field
Northwestern will be returning to Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois play No. 19 Purdue on Saturday.
The news was announced in February of 2021 by ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg. This will be the first time the Wildcats have played there since 2010. Pat Fitzgerald’s Northwestern lost the last game they played there by a score of 48-27 to in-state rival Illinois.
Head coach Pat Fitzgerald took to Twitter on Monday to express just he excited he is to play at the home of the Chicago Cubs for the first time in 11 years.
“It’s a great honor, having the privilege to lead a team out into that venue is spectacular. It presents some unique challenges with both teams being on the same sideline. But we’ll make it work.” – Fitz on what playing at Wrigley means to him personally.

Fitzgerald also said that he wouldn’t be opposed to playing at Soldier Field while Ryan Field is being renovated.
“Myself personally I’d be open to anything, we’re obviously going to have to play remotely [during renovation], but anywhere where we could play in Chicago will be good.” – Fitz on the idea of playing at Soldier Field while the team’s stadium is renovated.

While one of these team’s hopes for a bowl bid is over, it will be still be great to watch a football game being played at Wrigley. No. 19 Purdue (6-4) and Northwestern (3-7) play Saturday at 12 p.m. ET on Big Ten Network.
