The first week of the B1G schedule doesn’t present many marquee matchups. If it wasn’t the opening weekend, you might find yourself choosing to watch another conference.

But there’s always been one intriguing matchup that stands out above the rest — Northwestern’s trip to Stanford on Saturday, Aug. 31. Now, with the release of the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, there will be a little more intrigue for that contest.

Northwestern and Stanford both found their way into the Coaches Poll rankings on Thursday, both squeaking in near the bottom. The Cardinal sit at No. 23 while Northwestern rounds out the poll at No. 25.

It’ll be the only Top 25 matchup that features a B1G team that first weekend of the season. And it could be one of the best games in the country on that Saturday.

This year’s matchup in Palo Alto will be the eighth between the two squads. Stanford owns a 3-2-2 all-time series lead, but Northwestern won the most recent bout, a 16-6 victory in Evanston in 2015.

Both teams are also coming off similar seasons. Stanford finished last fall with a 9-4 record, which included a 14-13 win over Pitt in the Sun Bowl. Northwestern won its first division title in 2018 and ended the year with a victory over Utah in the Holiday Bowl to end the year 9-5.

Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET with coverage airing on FOX. Northwestern is a 6.5-point underdog.
