Jeremiah Smith has been unstoppable all season long, and Ohio State appears to have a clear game plan for the freshman receiver in the Rose Bowl.

That plan appears to be to feed the beast until Oregon finds a way to take him away. Across the first 2 drives by the Buckeyes, Smith already has 86 receiving yards and the game’s opening touchdown on just 3 catches.

Smith’s touchdown was especially tantalizing with Ohio State using play-action and misdirection to get the receiver a head of steam on a screen pass. He rolled for his 13th receiving touchdown of the season to open the Rose Bowl at 7-0.

With his 13th touchdown, Smith now has the Big Ten freshman record for receiving touchdowns in a season. Purdue’s Rondale Moore had 12 touchdowns, 114 catches and 1,258 yards in a phenomenal 2018 freshman season.

Smith is now up to 13 touchdowns, trailing Marvin Harrison Jr. (14, twice), David Boston (14) and Terry Glenn (17) for the most in a single season in Buckeye history (Chris Olave and Boston also had 13 receiving touchdowns in a season). The Big Ten record for receiving touchdowns in a season is held by Desmond Howard with 19 in 1991.
