Jeremiah Smith hype: Jack Sawyer offers candid uncensored reaction to 5-star freshman

Jeremiah Smith is generating all kinds of excitement ahead of his first game for Ohio State. Jack Sawyer contributed to that hype on Tuesday with a quote that isn’t completely suitable for print.

Sawyer is part of the Buckeye contingent representing OSU at Big Ten Media Days. The edge rusher was asked for his thoughts on Smith, and he had a lot to say, adding an adult quip that may be heard a lot around The Shoe this fall.

“There’s a lot of things I could list,” Sawyer told reporters. “That kid is just special, man. That’s the only word I can use to describe him.

“Having been in his shoes, meaning being a 5-star recruit and having a lot of hype around him coming in, I was like, man, I just want to see him practice a couple of times.

“I don’t want him to feel like if he doesn’t play this year or if he doesn’t live up to the hype his freshman year then, you know, but then I saw him for the first time at the first practice. I was like, ‘holy sh-t, this kid’s good.’”

Smith has been hyped long before becoming a Buckeye. He was the nation’s top recruit in the 2024 recruiting class.

Smith earned All-American status for a sensational senior season. He led Chaminade-Madonna Prep in Florida to a 14-0 season and state title, recording 88 receptions for 1,376 yards and 19 touchdowns.

He committed to OSU in December 2022. Smith remained pledged to the Buckeyes while allowing Florida, Florida State and Miami to continue to recruit him. There was Early Signing Day drama, but Smith ultimately signed with OSU in December.

Smith enrolled early, joining the Buckeyes for spring practice and wasting no time in shedding his black stripe. With his ability to make highlight catches, Smith could have many fans sharing Sawyer’s explicit exclamation this fall.
