Justin Fields takes first reps at QB during Ohio State spring practice
Ryan Day may have told Justin Fields that he’ll have to earn the starting spot at Ohio State when he first arrived in Columbus, but it’s the former five star prospect’s job to lose.
The Buckeyes opened spring practice on Wednesday morning, allowing media to get a brief glimpse of the work out. According to Bill Rabinowitz of the Columbus Dispatch, Fields took the first reps in quarterback drills.

The highest-rated prospect in Ohio State history, Fields was expected to leapfrog Matthew Baldwin and Chris Chugunov and become the Day 1 starter for the Buckeyes since transferring from Georgia.
The media window for watching the first day of @OhioStateFB spring practice just ended. FWIW, Justin Fields took the first reps at QB in drills.

There’s little surprise that Fields is taking the first reps in spring practice, being the most talented player at the position, at least from what we’ve seen early in his career. Though Baldwin and Chugunov provide depth at the position, it’s unlikely either steals the starting job from Fields.
Fields appeared in 12 games for the Bulldogs in 2018, completing 27-of-39 pass attempts for 328 yards and four touchdowns. Additionally, Fields rushed for 266 yards and four touchdowns.
It was unlikely Fields would take the starting job away from Jake Fromm at UGA, making the decision to transfer a little easier for the Georgia native.
