Ohio State is reportedly promoting tight ends coach Keenan Bailey as the Buckeyes continue to re-work the staff of Ryan Day for the 2025 season.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Bailey is being elevated to a co-offensive coordinator role this offseason. Bailey has been in Columbus since 2016 in various roles and took the role of tight ends coach in 2023.

Thamel reports that Bailey will continue in his TEs coach role with his new co-OC role. It creates a sort of three-headed offensive coordinating group headlined by new OC and longtime wide receivers coach Brian Hartline. New offensive line coach Tyler Bowen was also given the role of run game coordinator.

Impact for Ohio State

During the 2024 season, Chip Kelly rejuvenated the Buckeye offense into one of the elite units in the entire country. Ohio State tied for 12th nationally in points per game but was among the most efficient units in all of college football.

Kelly, the former head coach in college football and the NFL, used that success to return to the NFL with reports of becoming the highest-paid coordinator in the league. He joins the Las Vegas Raiders staff of Pete Carroll.

It was always going to be interesting to see how the Buckeyes addressed that loss, and the answer comes in the form of a collaborative group for 2025. Hartline is reportedly set to be the primary playcaller, but it appears clear there will be a joint venture between the offensive staff this season.

We’ll see how it works out in Columbus as Ryan Day tries to keep his program operating at a high clip after losing both Kelly and defensive coordinator Jim Knowles on the heels of a national title.
