Ohio State WRs coach Zach Smith found himself in the headlines for the wrong reasons this week when a Buckeyes website learned of Smith’s court appearance for the May 12 incident which was reported as an arrest for criminal trespassing.
Now that the story is in the press, Smith’s attorney has spoken to The Columbus Dispatch to provide a backstory and context to the charge.
Bradley Koffel, Smith’s attorney, maintains that his client was not arrested as widely reported, but only received a citation. According to Koffel, Smith was dropping off his son at his ex-wife’s apartment. Koffel told the paper that the shared-parenting agreement allows Smith to do that, but a police officer reportedly told Smith not to drop off at the apartment any more.
Koffel also relayed a conversation the two had prior to the citation.
“He’s just following what he’s supposed to do as a noncustodial parent,” Koffel told the paper. “She decided, with little or no notice, ‘Don’t drop our son off at my place.’ He said, ‘Where do I drop him off?’”
Smith said he did not get an immediate answer and decided to do the drop off at the apartment.
Smith’s attorney says the Buckeyes coach did not leave his car during the drop off.
