Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes are preparing to take on Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff National Championship.

This will be the first meeting between these teams since 2023. Ohio State won that game, but the bigger story was the beef between Day and legendary coach Lou Holtz. Holtz questioned the Buckeyes’ toughness prior to that game and Ryan Day took exception to the comments, firing off a passionate response to Holtz following the game.

Ahead of the upcoming matchup between these teams, Day was asked if he has spoken to Holtz since the exchange.

“No. No,” said Day, without adding any further comment.

Usually, these beefs get squashed behind the scenes and everybody moves on. However, neither man in this situation reached out to do so and the tension appears to still be real.

Day was also asked about that last win over Notre Dame and what the win means to him ahead of this rematch.

“Yeah, I have a tremendous amount of respect for Notre Dame and certainly what Marcus (Freeman) has done there. I think they’re a gritty group,” said Day. “They’re a tough group. They’re a great program. The last two years it’s been a battle playing against them, and we know it’s going to be the same way.”

The Buckeyes and Fighting Irish played during the regular season in 2022 and 2023. The Buckeyes came out on top in both games, winning by 11 in 2022 and 3 in 2023. The championship matchup will kick off from Atlanta on Jan. 20 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
