Entrenched in a battle to be Ben Roethlisberger’s backup in Pittsburgh, Dwayne Haskins produced his best performance of the preseason Thursday night.

So far, the race to be No. 2 on the depth chart for the Steelers is between Haskins and Mason Rudolph. During the game against the Philadelphia Eagles, it was Haskins that performed better and produced points for the Steelers.

After Rudolph led three straight drives that ended in punts, Haskins took the reigns and led Pittsburgh on four scoring drives. Haskins threw one touchdown and put up 24 points while leading the offense as the Steelers went on to win, 24-16.

After the game, head coach Mike Tomlin had plenty of good things to say about Haskins’ night. Tomlin praised Haskins for “being in command” and maintaining good communication with the offense:

“I thought he was in command tonight,” said Tomlin according to Joe Rutter with TribLive.com. “He did a great job communicating with people, going through his progressions. There was a third-down play, third-and-8 maybe, and I saw him go through three or four reads and throw the ball over the middle of the field and converted for us. That was a snapshot of the night he had.”

With two preseason games left to go for the Steelers, it will be interesting to see if Haskins can build off this performance and land the No. 2 spot on the depth chart.
