“Didn’t see that one coming,” Meyer said of his former offensive coordinator. “There’s high expectations at Florida. I’ll call him tonight. He and Megan are dear, dear friends.”

As the head coach at Florida, Meyer won 2 national championships with Mullen as his OC. The duo also coached quarterback Tim Tebow to a Heisman trophy campaign in 2007. Following the 2008 season, Mullen left Meyer’s staff to take the head coaching job at Mississippi State.

In 2017, he was hired back to Florida as the team’s head coach.

But the Gators have lost 9 of their last 11 against Power 5 competition and 4 straight against SEC opponents. Its only wins in league play this season have come against Tennessee and Vanderbilt. The calls for Mullen’s job have grown louder with each passing week. Florida was just one week removed from giving up 52 points to an FCS opponent at home.

Florida has 1 game left this season: a home tilt against in-state rival Florida State (5-6, 4-4 ACC) set for noon ET on Nov. 27 on ESPN.
