Urban Meyer isn’t the kind of guy who makes a lot of excuses. And he isn’t the kind of guy who tolerates other coaches making excuses, either.

The latter was recently discovered when CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd spoke with the Ohio State head coach recently about a few coaches who have made some pretty outlandish comments recently, one of those being a former Buckeyes assistant.

Following Texas’ 51-41 loss to Maryland, Tom Herman subtly blamed Charlie Strong and the team he inherited for the defeat. It precisely the type of excuse that drives Meyer insane.

“C’mon man. I don’t know where that came from,” Meyer told CBS Sports. “It’s like a new generation of excuse. [Herman] said, ‘I can’t rub pixie dust on this thing.’ He got a dose of reality. Maryland just scored 51 points on you.”

Here’s what Herman had to say following the Longhorns’ loss:

If we all thought that we were going to come in here and in nine months sprinkle some fairy dust on this team and think that we’ve arrived then we’re wrong.

Meyer also said he wasn’t pleased when Will Muschamp made references to Florida being a mess after the coaching change. Muschamp took over the Gators in 2011 and was eventually fired in 2014.

It was mostly Herman this time, that got on Meyer’s bad side, though. And the Ohio State head coach said he always advises his coaches to be very gracious and complimentary when taking over a program.

“I’ve advised my coaches when they take new positions [to] always be extremely complimentary. Never talk as if those players aren’t your players,” he explained. “… When I hear coaches say, ‘These aren’t my guys. Wait ’til we get some guys in here,’ I cringe. Whose guys do you think they are?”

Apparently Herman didn’t take his former boss too seriously.
