James Franklin talks Iowa football tradition, pink locker rooms and The Wave
James Franklin addressed several topics during his Tuesday press conference in addition to the alumni letter Jonathan Sutherland received.
First, Franklin talked about two of the more famous Iowa football traditions — the pink visitors locker room and the wave to the children’s hospital next to Kinnick Stadium. He said Penn State would embrace both
JF: "I think the (visiting) pink locker rooms (at Iowa) is awesome. It's one of the better historical things in college football." Will embrace that, and the tradition of waving to the children at the hospital overlooking Kinnick.

The crowd waving to the children’s hospital has become one of the best traditions in college football, but the pink locker room has been the subject of controversy in years past. Some have previously argued Iowa’s reason for the pink locker room, putting the opponent in a “passive, submissive mood” because pink is associated with femininity, is demeaning towards women and the LGBT community.
Rather than address that controversy, Franklin is preparing his team to meet the challenge head on. That goes for the obstacles Iowa will present on the field as well.
Franklin called both of Iowa’s starting defensive ends, AJ Epanesa and Chauncey Golston, who have a combined 3.0 sacks and 4.0 tackles for loss, impressive. The Penn State coach also implied that while Iowa won’t surprise them or do a lot of different things, what the Hawkeyes will do they will always do very well.
JF: Both Iowa DEs, Golston and Epanesa, are impressive.

JF: Iowa does what it does, and does it really well.
