Saquon Barkley: Lombardi Trophy trumps rushing record
Saquon Barkley will go down in history for the best individual season ever compiled by a running back. However, the former Penn State star truly only cared about one accomplishment, and now he has it.
A Super Bowl ring and the Lombardi Trophy.
The good news is Barkley can go down in history with both the individual rushing record (regular season + playoffs) and a Super Bowl title. However, his overall numbers in the Super Bowl were otherwise disappointing with just 57 rushing yards as the Kansas City Chiefs tried to limit the Philadelphia Eagles superstar.
Barkley admitted the season was impressive after the game but deflected the attention onto his blockers for carving out the running lanes. He also confirmed where his priorities were all along.
“Hell of a year,” Barkley said after the game. “I couldn’t do it without the big boys up front, everyone on this team. I just appreciate them, the whole Eagles organization. Me being a newcomer, welcomed me in with open arms and helping build confidence back in me too. That was definitely helpful. It was a hell of a year, but all of the numbers and stats are cool, but the best thing is being able to hold that Lombardi Trophy.”
The Chiefs limiting Barkley still wasn’t enough for Kansas City to get the win with Jalen Hurts rolling to the Super Bowl MVP trophy behind 3 total touchdowns for the Eagles. The win was especially important for Barkley as the RB said his records “wouldn’t mean anything” without the ring.
“It’s cool,” Barkley said. “To be honest, the most important thing was winning the Super Bowl. Because if we didn’t win today, all those accolades and all those yards wouldn’t mean anything. So, it’s cool. I don’t want to downplay it because I couldn’t do it without the boys up front, and I know how much that means to them. For me, thankful, couldn’t do it without God, but I like that Lombardi Trophy a little bit more.”
Even with Barkley’s comments about the record, grabbing the individual rushing record has to be gratifying, especially after the way the regular season ended.
Barkley became just the 9th player in NFL history to rush for 2,000+ yards in the regular season but came up just short of Eric Dickerson’s regular season record. However, Barkley had the regular season finale to try and eclipse the mark, but the Eagles made the decision to rest their starters for the playoff push.
In the end, it all worked out with Barkley getting the combined record, and Philadelphia winning it all.
