Saquon Barkley understands the NFL’s single-season rushing record appears to be within reach in the regular-season finale for the Philadelphia Eagles. However, he’s looking at the bigger picture of the postseason.

On Sunday, Barkley officially reached the 2,000-yard club with one game still to play. He needs just 101 rushing yards against a poor New York Giants defense to break Eric Dickerson’s single-season record, but Barkley was adamant after the game it’s not his focus.

In fact, Barkley said he would be fine if it is a coach’s decision to rest Philadelphia’s stars in preparation for the playoffs:

“I’m not overly trying to go get it. I’m not scared of it, I would love to (get it), but at the end of the day, we’ve got bigger things we’re focusing on,” said Barkley of the rushing record.

“We were able to clinch the division right here. Whether it’s we play next week or not and rest, I’m fine with that, too, because I didn’t come here and sign here just to rush for 2,000 or break a record. I want to do something special, meaning special with the team.”

It’s hard to envision the former Penn State star not getting a legitimate shot at the record next week, but his desire to focus on the postseason is understandable. In his 7-year NFL career, Barkley has appeared in just 2 playoff games, both coming during the 2022 season with the Giants.

Considering Barkely’s performance, and Philadelphia’s other tools, the team will have its sights set on reaching the Super Bowl if everyone stays healthy in the playoffs.
