Tom Allen was the head coach of the Indiana Hoosiers from 2017 through 2023. Despite being Penn State’s new defensive coordinator, an infamous contest between the Hoosiers and the Nittany Lions still followed him to Happy Valley.

Back when Washington star quarterback Michael Penix Jr. played for Indiana in the 2020 season, he punched in a two-point conversion to help the Hoosiers beat the Nittany Lions by a 36-35 score in overtime. Replays, however, showed that Penix may have been short of the pylon. After going to review, the play and the call was upheld on the field.

At a press conference on Wednesday, Allen showed a humorous side to the call and still believes it was a successful conversion:

“I get it. It depends on what glasses you’re wearing. It depends on who you’re cheering for,” Allen said. “It was very contested on both sides and reviewed and talked about to nauseam.”

Allen’s further belief in the play is in the form of a “big picture” in his Penix executing the conversion. Regardless, it proved to be a key win for Indiana to kickstart the 2020 season.

“It’s probably considered a (conversion) today,” Allen said. “It could be considered a touchdown 20 years from now, but bottom line, it was a great game and great win for the Indiana Hoosiers.”
