Ex-Purdue QB lands coaching gig at MAC program
A former Purdue quarterback has gone from player to coach.
On Friday, Austin Appleby tweeted out that he has joined Jim McElwain’s staff at Central Michigan. According to the team website, Appleby is a quality control assistant with the Chippewas.
Appleby played for McElwain while he was at the University of Florida. He spent one season with the Gators (2016) after playing his first three years at Purdue under Darrell Hazell (2013-15).
In three seasons at Purdue, Appleby appeared in 17 games, making a handful of starts throughout his career. He threw for 2,777 yards and threw 19 touchdowns with 19 interceptions while in West Lafayette.
He also rushed for 290 yards and nine touchdowns.

After the 2015 season, Appleby decided to leave West Lafayette and complete his college career in Gainesville. He appeared in nine games at Florida, throwing for 1,447 yards and 10 touchdowns with seven interceptions. He completed just under 61 percent of his passes.
Central Michigan opens the season on Aug. 29 against Albany. Appleby will be back in B1G country on Sept. 7, when the Chippewas play Wisconsin.
