Purdue did not look good at all in the first half against Ohio State. Coming off their first loss of the season, the top-ranked Boilermakers fell behind by 12 points to the No. 24 Buckeyes in Columbus.

Matt Painter’s squad did rally toward halftime and closed the deficit to 36-33. The second half was much tighter than the first with things going back and forth down the stretch.

In the final minute, it looked like Ohio State was going to pull off the upset. Sean McNeil provided a clutch 3, giving the Buckeyes a 69-66 lead with 40 seconds left.

Purdue responded with a bucket by Zach Edey and still on the ensuing inbounds play from Ohio State. That set up the Boilermakers for a chance to run an offensive play off a timeout.

As expected, Purdue dumped the ball down low to Edey, knowing a double-team would come. That double-team converged with Edey executing a clean pass out of the post to Fletcher Loyer.

Loyer’s shot was pure with his third 3-point field goal giving Purdue a 71-69 lead with 12 seconds remaining. Ohio State would get one final look, but it was not clean one with the Boilermakers hanging on for the win.

When it was all said and done, Edey tied for the team-high with 16 points and added 11 rebounds and 4 assists to his efficient double-double. Braden Smith also provided a spark for Purdue, finishing with 16 points, 6 assists and just 1 turnover in the game. Loyer (11 points) and Ethan Morton (10) also reached double figures for Purdue.

For the Buckeyes, Brice Sensabaugh was sensational all game long. He finished with a game-high 21 points to lead all scorers and added 5 rebounds and an assist. Unfortunately, Ohio State’s final shot by Sensabaugh was no good with Purdue blowing up that final look.

A bigger concern for Ohio State after the loss will be the status of Zed Key. The forward was injured in the first half and left the court in obvious pain with his shoulder hanging limp. That injury was eventually ruled a shoulder sprain.
