Rutgers is quietly putting together one of the nation’s best recruiting classes for 2022.

The Scarlet Knights made some noise when they earned a pledge from top-100 quarterback Gavin Wimsatt last week, but the work started long before that.

Wimsatt was player No. 11 in this class, and the fourth 4-star to commit to Greg Schiano’s program.

According to 247Sports Composite rankings, Rutgers currently has the No. 6 class in the nation and the No. 2 class in the Big Ten.

The last time Rutgers finished a class with even three 4-star prospects was 2017. That class finished No. 42 nationally and No. 9 in the Big Ten.

Five of Rutgers’ 11 commitments hail from the state of New Jersey, but that’s not where the Scarlet Knights are getting their bluechip talent. All five players from the garden state are 3-star prospects, but Rutgers does have pledges from two 4-star Pennsylvanians. Schiano also has a commitment from a 4-star from Florida and Wimsatt, who is from Kentucky.

Here’s a list of all of Rutgers’ commitments to date:

  • 4-star QB Gavin Wimsatt (Kentucky)
  • 4-star LB Anthony Johnson (Pennsylvania)
  • 4-star WR Amarion Brown (Florida)
  • 4-star RB Samuel Brown (Pennsylvania)
  • 3-star DE Kenny Fletcher (New Jersey)
  • 3-star WR Rashad Rochelle (Illinois)
  • 3-star OL Taj White (New Jersey)
  • 3-star WR Jojo Bermudez (New Jersey)
  • 3-star OL Kwabena Asamoah (Ohio)
  • 3-star OL Joe De Croce (New Jersey)
  • 3-star OL Nelson Monegro (New Jersey)

As Rutgers looks to fill out the rest of the class, expect the Scarlet Knights to focus on the defensive side of the ball. So far, only two of their 11 commitments play on defense.

However, Rutgers should be nearly done on offense. Schiano has already earned pledges from three receivers, four offensive lineman, a quarterback and a running back. Rutgers could end up adding a couple more offensive commitments as the class develops, but there’s already a really strong base here.

The Early Signing Period for the 2022 cycle begins in December.
