It has been a rough season for Rutgers, particularly at the quarterback position.

The Scarlet Knights entered the year with a two-man competition ongoing between transfer McLane Carter and Artur Sitkowski. But after an injury to Carter and Sitkowski’s decision to redshirt, Rutgers is now onto freshman Johnny Langan.

Unfortunately, the last two weeks have been especially brutal. In a shutout loss to Indiana, Langan completed 5 of 13 passes for 1 yard. Langan did improve on his output in the loss to Minnesota, but unfortunately, he also had more miscues. In that game, he 9-for-19 for 48 yards and three interceptions.

Heading into Week 9 and a game against Liberty, interim coach Nunzio Campanile was asked if a change was likely at the position. Campanile admitted that Cole Snyder will likely see more reps throughout the week, but Rutgers will try to be intentional about preserving Snyder’s redshirt this season.

Bobby Deren with Scarlet Nation shared Campanile’s comments from his Monday press conference:

“I don’t know if it’ll be an open competition,” explained Campanile. “Cole will get more reps. He needs to be more prepared. I’ve talked to him, we are going to preserve his redshirt. I don’t think that would be fair to him or for the future of the program to not do that. But if there’s opportunities where we think he gives us the best chance to do something, we’ll use him. We’ll see how practice goes throughout the week, but he will get more reps, and we’ll try to get him as many reps in the competitive situations as we can to prepare him in the event that we decide to go that route. But right now, Johnny is going to start the game, and we’ll keep building on what we’re doing.”

Rutgers takes on Liberty with Saturday’s kickoff set for 12 pm EST on BTN.
