Legal History Of Maryland Sports Betting

A 2018 move from the Supreme Court to strike down a federal law that barred sports betting was the first domino to fall. Then during the 2020 ballot referendum, Maryland began the push for legalizing commercial sports betting within the state.

In 2021, the law to allow sports betting was officially passed and signed into law, with the state then needing to launch the operation. The first phase of the launch came via in-person legal sports betting at retail brick-and-mortar locations throughout the state.

The next segment of legal sports betting will set online/mobile sports betting into action, with the state’s Wagering Application Review Commission already approving up to 60 mobile sports betting licenses on a rolling basis. It’s fully expected that BetRivers Sportsbook will be among the first available when online sports betting officially goes live in Maryland.

Given that the Maryland Wagering Review Commission is already approving licenses for online sports betting operators, there should be a number of different options available on day one.
