Lincoln Riley had some good news to relay on Wednesday regarding star tight end Lake McRee. However, he also took the opportunity to call on one specific kind of hit to become illegal.

In the game against Michigan, McRee was injured and knocked out of the game when he had his legs taken out on a hard tackle. McRee had just caught a screen pass and was turning to run up the field when he was hit around the knees and flipped head over heels.

His left knee was bent at an awkward angle as McRee came back down to the ground, but Riley revealed it was not a season-ending injury Tuesday night:

“We got good news (on McRee). He’ll be back this year. He won’t be back for sure probably for the next couple of weeks but really some positive news given the hit,” said Riley.

As for the hit itself, it’s one that USC’s head coach would really like to see be taken out of the game. Riley did not criticize Michigan’s defender because it is a legal hit, but he also believes it is a hit that can easily be taken out of the game and cleaned up.

“I think it’s one — I don’t fault the kid from Michigan, it’s legal right now. But a hit like that does not need to be legal,” Riley claimed. “You think of all the things in general in football and college football that we’ve cleaned up, it is very simple to clean up a defenseless player that can’t see and you going low on him. What happened to Lake, honestly, he’s incredibly lucky…

“That’s something that needs to get some attention and be cleaned up, because that (hit) makes the game no better and is just something that should not happen in my opinion.”

It’s unclear how many other coaches may agree with Riley, but at least McRee was not seriously hurt in the hit.
