Penn State and Wisconsin's offenses just produced something that hasn't happened in almost 50 years
Penn State and Wisconsin’s offenses were so futile on Saturday that they matched a mark that hasn’t been reached in almost 50 years.
The Nittany Lions and Badgers finished the first half in a scoreless tie. It’s the first time since 1973 that two ranked teams have done that in a season-opener, per Elias.
Before today, the only other season-opening game (for both teams) between two ranked schools in which neither team scored in the first half was LSU-Colorado in 1973.

That LSU-Colorado game finished as a 17-6 victory for the Tigers.
Wisconsin came close to scoring twice. Penn State blocked a short field goal attempt to stifle the Badgers’ first scoring chance. The Nittany Lions later recovered a fumble in the red zone.
Penn State’s offense was much worse. The Nittany Lions managed just 43 yards on 22 plays in the first half. Noah Cain was PSU’s leading rusher with three yards on two carries.
Penn State managed just one first down and struggled to move the ball against Wisconsin’s stout defense.
The Nittany Lions are looking for their fifth consecutive win over Wisconsin.
