Final Score: Kent State 0, Wisconsin 48

Brief Recap: This game went as expected with the Badgers controlling everything from the opening kick. After forcing a quick three-and-out on the game’s opening drive, Wisconsin marched right down the field on nine plays. Jonathan Taylor punched in a touchdown to cap it off, giving him a touchdown on all five opening drives for Wisconsin this season. From there, the Badgers forced four first-half punts and scored on each drive for a 28-0 halftime lead. In the end, Wisconsin scored touchdowns on the first seven drives of the game and rolled against the Golden Flashes.

Key Moment: In a game so lopsided, we’re going with the historical moment of the game. With a 48-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, Jonathan Taylor officially passed Melvin Gordon for third place on Wisconsin’s all-time rushing list. The run put Taylor just ahead of Gordon’s 4,915 career total. He now trails just Ron Dayne (7,125) and Montee Ball (5,140) on the all-time list. Barring something drastic, Taylor should surpass Ball in the near future. He would probably need to return to school for his senior season to make a run at Dayne’s all-time mark, but Taylor could opt to enter the NFL Draft instead.

Key Stat: 27. What is the significance? Taylor eclipsed the 100-yard rushing mark for the 27th time in 33 career games. He finished the game with 186 yards rushing and 4 TDs on the ground. That leaves just six behind Ron Dayne (33) for most 100-yard rushing games all-time at Wisconsin. The Badgers have, at minimum, seven regular-season games remaining. Add in a likely bowl game and a potential B1G Championship Game appearance, there is a great chance Taylor breaks that record this season.

Key Player: At the risk of sounding like a broken record, it has to go to Jonathan Taylor. Do not underestimate the pass rush and tenacity of this Badger defense, but Taylor is obviously the heart and soul of this team. And he played like it on Saturday. After adding three catches for 29 yards and a touchdown, Taylor finished with over 200 yards from scrimmage and five touchdowns in the game. His five touchdowns tied the school record for touchdowns in a game. Taylor also became the first B1G player with five scrimmage TDs since Saquon Barkley in 2016. He has the most touchdowns through five games since Ricky Williams in 1998.

What it Means: Wisconsin had no thoughts of suffering a letdown in the break from B1G play. The Badgers steamrolled Kent State and won in total domination mode. It was expected, but it was nonetheless a great performance before welcoming Michigan State to Madison next weekend. Wisconsin should be favored in that contest, but it will be a much tougher test against a stout defense.
