Coming into this weekend, Wisconsin and Minnesota had to win in order to set up a winner-take-all matchup between the two teams in the regular season finale.

Technically, Minnesota could have lost, but with its win over Northwestern, the Golden Gophers still have College Football Playoff hopes. If they end the season with one loss, but wins over Wisconsin and Ohio State to close the year — along with a Penn State win earlier — it would be hard keeping them out of the top four.

Regardless, both Wisconsin and Minnesota did win. Next week’s matchup only means that much more.

The Minnesota game finished before the Wisconsin game started on Saturday. After the Gophers’ victory, coach P.J. Fleck said, “Boiler up.” Why?

Because that’s Purdue’s slogan. And Purdue was going against Wisconsin soon thereafter. Had the Boilermakers beaten Wisconsin, Minnesota would have clinched the Big Ten West division.

That, of course, isn’t how it all played out. Wisconsin took care of business.

After the game, Badgers LB Chris Orr heard of Fleck’s comment. He had a response:

Orr isn’t worried. He thinks Fleck can have his fun.

For now, that is.
