Wisconsin will find itself shorthanded at the quarterback position this offseason with both primary players at the position opting for the transfer portal.

On Wednesday, Braedyn Locke confirmed his intentions via social media. Locke was on occasional starter in the 2023 season and took over the reins in 2024 after Tyler Van Dyke’s season-ending injury.

“Thank you to the University of Wisconsin, the coaches, and my teammates for an unforgettable 2 years,” wrote Locke. “I’ll always cherish my time here. I will be entering the transfer portal with 2 years of eligibility remaining.”

Locke’s decision follows shortly after Tuesday reports that Van Dyke is also looking to leave the Badgers after one season in Madison. Expectations were high for Van Dyke entering 2024 in Phil Longo’s offense, but he appeared in just 3 games with just 422 passing yards and just 1 touchdown before an injury against Alabama derailed his season.

As for Locke, Longo and head coach Luke Fickell were adamant in the offseason that both QBs were starting caliber, and that was a good thing with Locke going on to start after Van Dyke’s injury. He appeared in 11 total games this season but completed just 55.4% of his passes with 13 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

Some of the turnover offensively should be expected for Wisconsin with the program moving forward with a new offensive coordinator for 2025. Still, it puts the Badgers in a major position of need at QB heading into what could be a pivotal Year 3 for Fickell.
