Illinois adds commitment from former Miami DB via transfer
The Illinois defense just added a commitment from an experienced defender Friday.
Derrick Smith is a junior defensive back who played for Miami from 2017-18. He recorded 24 tackles in limited playing time with the Hurricanes and recently announced his intent to transfer.
Smith announced last week that he had narrowed his next destination down to four schools with Nebraska and Illinois among the finalists. On Friday, Smith indicated on Twitter that he is heading to the Illini:

As of now, Smith will have to sit out the 2019 season unless a waiver is approved. Still, he will be a nice addition to an Illinois defense that needs depth and better numbers moving forward. Smith will have two years of eligibility with the Illini.
