Another quarterback battle in the B1G has been decided.

Head coach Lovie Smith officially announced Tuesday that Illinois will be rolling with transfer Brandon Peters as the starting quarterback in Week 1. Peters arrived at Illinois after beginning his career with Michigan. He threw for 680 yards, four touchdowns, and three interceptions in limited action with the Wolverines.

Peters was in competition with freshman Isaiah Williams for the starting gig. Williams certainly has displayed some flashes and impressed at times during camp. But for now, Peters will be the starter to open the season.

Smith particularly noted that Peters has thrown the ball well and is a better runner than he usually gets credit for. Peters has also grown as a leader with the Illini:

“We loved Brandon when we got a chance to know him during the recruiting process,” Smith said. “Now that we’ve seen him on the field, he has been everything we though he would be. He has really thrown the ball well and is a better runner than he’s given credit for. Most importantly, he has moved into a leadership role for us. We’re pumped up about Brandon leading us heading into the season.”

Illinois will get the season rolling August 31 against Akron. Kickoff is set for 12 pm EST.
