Michigan reportedly loses another assistant coach to Jim Harbaugh's Chargers staff
Michigan defensive line coach Mike Elston is departing the program, according to a report.
That’s per the NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, who notes that Elston is joining Jim Harbaugh’s staff with the Chargers in the same role. Elston was a key assistant on Michigan’s defensive staff over the past 2 seasons.

Elston joined the Wolverines ahead of the 2022 season after a long stint as an assistant coach at Notre Dame. While in Ann Arbor, Michigan consistently had one of the nation’s best defensive line units. The Wolverines finished 2nd in the Big Ten in tackles for loss this past season.
Elston was also Michigan’s recruiting coordinator over the past 2 years, creating another role that needs to be filled on Sherrone Moore’s staff in the coming weeks.
Michigan has now lost 4 staffers to the Chargers this offseason, in addition to Harbaugh. Elston joins Jesse Minter, Ben Herbert and Dylan Roney in making the trip out west. Jay Harbaugh is also reportedly expected to leave for a role with the Seattle Seahawks.
Moore has already made a couple of staff decisions this offseason. He elevated Kirk Campbell and Grant Newsome to new roles late last week. JB Brown was also promoted to be Michigan’s next special teams coordinator last week.
