The lead up
Saturday Tradition News: One AP writer has B1G team falling in ‘upset special’
Six B1G teams are playing Power Five opponents on Saturday, giving the conference a huge opportunity to make a national statement in Week 2.
But one Associated Press writer believes one team from the B1G will have their plans at a big-time early-season victory spoiled.
Ralph Russo has picked Arizona State to pull off the ‘upset special’ this weekend, predicting the Sun Devils to come up with a win over No. 15 Michigan State. The Spartans are a 6-point favorite heading into the contest, according to MyBookie.com.
Saturday Tradition News: Key Michigan State OL returns to practice
Michigan State’s offensive line might be getting some major help.
The Spartans struggled up front in the Week 1 win over Utah State, as running lanes collapsed quickly and Brian Lewerke found himself scrambling frequently. Part of the reason was because 16-game start Cole Chewins was out of the lineup.
But Chewins might be back in action soon for Michigan State, a huge addition if he’s available this week against Arizona State.
Saturday Tradition News: Surprised MSU struggled with Utah State? Here’s why you shouldn’t be
The Spartans are just 4-7 in covering the spread in Week 1 games since Dantonio took over. There was no spread available for the 2009 season opener against Montana State.
Michigan State’s win-loss record in those games? 11-1.
The Spartans were 23.5-point favorites in Friday night’s opener against Utah State, coming up well short of covering that spread. They were also without starting offensive lineman Cole Chewins and star defensive back Josiah Scott, which would’ve helped the Spartans in the depth and talent departments.
