Things seem to be heating up in Starkville, Mississippi.

On Saturday, Mississippi State suffered another defeat on the year, falling 49-30 on the road to Texas A&M. That loss dropped the Bulldogs to 3-5 on the season with a 1-4 mark in the SEC. Now, there’s talk of second-year head coach Joe Moorhead being on the hot seat.

Monday, SEC Network radio host Paul Finebaum weighed in on the Moorhead situation, and was fairly doom and gloom about the idea that Mississippi State will be successful with the current regime in place.

“I don’t know what the path is anyway [for Joe Moorhead to stay at Mississippi State],” Finebaum said on WJOX The RoundTable. “I was there last week, there’s just a really weird feeling about him. We can all say in unison he’s a great guy and a smart guy and we all like him, and all those things are true. But he just doesn’t feel like the right coach for Mississippi State.”

After painting that picture of Moorhead’s future in Starkville, Finebaum was asked whether or not he believes Moorhead would have any interest in the job at Rutgers. Recently, reports have said that Moorhead is the top candidates to fill the vacancy in Piscataway.

“If you’re sitting up at Rutgers right now, you’re watching this unfold and you’re going ‘Do we really want this guy?'” Finebaum said.

As much as Moorhead has struggled at Mississippi State, Moorhead has been pretty successful on the East Coast. He had an excellent run at Fordham before helping lead Penn State’s offense to an incredibly prolific two-year run in 2016 and 2017. He seems like a good fit for the Scarlet Knights.

Only time will tell if he has any interest in the job, and whether or not he’ll be in Starkville when the season comes to an end.
