According to Ross Dellenger with Sports Illustrated, college football leaders are now considering a model that is best described as “5+1.” In the new model, the 6 automatic bids would not go to the 6 highest-ranked conference champs. Instead, the auto bids would go to the Power 5 conference champs and the best Group of 5 conference champ.
NEWS: Leaders are mulling an alternate 12-team playoff expansion model proposed last week, sources tell @SINow.
Instead of 6 highest-ranked conference champs getting auto bids, the alternate model grants AQs to each P5 champion + best G5 champ – a “5+1”https://t.co/Ok33FuObIg

It may appear as a slight change to the proposed model, but it could be enough to sway the vote in favor of a 12-team model. As Dellenger points out, there has been just 1 season during the CFP era where a Power 5 champ was outranked by multiple Group of 5 champions.
Something to note about the 12-team alternate format: It’s unlikely to change the field from the original proposal.
In 7 years of CFP, each P5 champion would have made the field except last year, when two G5 champs surpassed P12 champ Oregon.https://t.co/Ok33FuObIg

Will we get expansion in the near future, or will the committee decide to stay at 4 teams through at least 2025? They are scheduled to meet in December.
