When it comes to recruiting, James Franklin has incredibly high standards. When it comes to the 2021 class, the Penn State head coach isn’t mincing words — his staff hasn’t gotten the job done.

Franklin spoke with the media via a Zoom call on Thursday, one day after the B1G announced it would reinstate the fall season. With the last six months being so unique on the recruiting front, the head coach addressed some of the concerns with the 2021 class, and he’s not really pleased with how the class stands currently.

“I want to be clear on this, that this class is not done, but up to this point, we haven’t gotten it done,” Franklin said, according to Greg Pickel of PennLive.com. “We have not recruited up to the standard that we normally have.”

Penn State currently only has 13 players committed in the 2021 class. That group is pretty solid, with six prospects listed as 4-star talents, while 10 commits are ranked inside the top 500 overall in the cycle.

Still, the Nittany Lions rank 8th in the B1G and 33rd nationally with this class — primarily because of the small total.

Penn State has been really consistent on the recruiting front over the last four years. They’ve finished either 2nd or 3rd in the B1G with each cycle since 2018 and have ranked in the top 20 nationally. It’s a big reason the Nittany Lions have been one of the top contenders in the conference regularly.

Because of the circumstances, Penn State finds itself a little behind the 8-ball right now. There’s still plenty of time to right the ship, though.
