For years, the B1G has been known for its ability to produce top-tier running backs. The 2022 season is anything but different in terms of running backs making headlines.

Through 3 games this season, 3 B1G running back currently rank inside the top 5 of all FBS rushers. Illinois running back Chase Brown leads the charge with 496 rushing yards. Minnesota’s Mohamed Ibrahim and Nebraska’s Anthony Grant are tied for second place with 464 yards.

Brown, a 5-11 junior from London, Ontario, has been the catalyst for Illinois’ offense success. In 3 games, Brown has recorded at least 19 carries and rushed for over 145 yards. Against B1G West rival Indiana, Brown had a career day in carries (36) and rushing yards (199).

For the season, Brown is averaging 6.6 yards per run. He hasn’t scored a touchdown since the Week 0 opener against Wyoming.

Ibrahim hasn’t missed a beat since returning from his ruptured Achilles suffered back in Week 1 of the 2021 season. As the focal point of the Golden Gophers’ offense, Ibrahim has averaged 22 carries per game and 6.9 yards per run. Last week against Colorado, the 5-10, 210-pound senior rushed for 202 yards and 3 touchdowns off 23 carries, averaging 8.8 yards per run.

Currently, Ibrahim is also tied for the FBS lead in rushing touchdowns with Michigan’s Blake Corum at 7.

Grant has been utilized in a running back-by-committee backfield this season in Lincoln this season. So far, he’s been the leading man the Huskers’ most consistent runner. Prior to Saturday’s 49-14 loss to No. 6 Oklahoma, the junior recorded 3 consecutive 100-plus rushing yard performances.

For the year, Grant is currently averaging 5.7 yards per run. He also scored at least 1 touchdown in the first 3 games of the season.
